Limits on Transfer Credits

UC will only accept 70 semester (105 quarter) units of credit for lower-division coursework completed at any non-UC schools.

All incoming transfer credit is evaluated by Undergraduate Admissions.

  • Units earned through AP, IB and/or A level examinations are not included in the limitation.
  • Units earned at any UC campus (Extension, summer, cross/concurrent and regular academic year enrollment) are not included in the limitation.
  • Transfer credit/units will not be applied for courses that repeat material, also known as duplication of credit.

Limit example: Statistic courses have a UCR limit, credit is only allowed for STAT 004, STAT 008, STAT 010, or STAT 011.

Duplication of credit example: Student completed MATH 009A (or equivalent) at UCR and takes another Calculus course over the summer. UCR will not award credit for the second Calculus course as it is deemed to be duplication of credit.

In addition, UC places limitations on the number of units/credits or courses awarded in the following areas:

  • English as a Second Language courses: a maximum of 8 semester (12 quarter) units
  • Physical Education courses: a maximum of 4 semester (6 quarter) units of PE activity; a maximum of 8 semester (12 quarter) units of PE theory
  • Foreign language placement and high school coursework may affect transferability of college level foreign language courses.
